Julian Nagelsmann is among the favourites to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham following his cut-throat dismissal at Bayern Munich and history shows the German tactician has already previously got under the skin of the Italian, adding fresh background to an already-intriguing story. Last summer, England captain Harry Kane was strongly linked with Bayern Munich and although the transfer was never likely to happen, the Bundesliga club were keen to make their admiration for the player known.

Bayern chiefs Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Khan both declared that Kane was held in high regard in Munich and Nagelsmann followed suit in a bid to entice the Tottenham talisman into a move.

Despite Kane’s excessive price tag, the 46-year-old failed to rule out a swoop, saying: “He’s very expensive that’s the problem – but a brilliant player, one of two or three who can play as a centre forward [as well as a] No 10. But he’s very strong, brilliant with [his] head and both feet.

“He could score a lot in the Bundesliga, I don’t know the price, but it’s really tough for Bayern Munich. We’ll see what happens in the future.”

But Conte was not best pleased with the comments, something he made known during a press conference in July.

“Honestly, I did not hear this,” Conte said when asked about Nagelsmann’s comments following Spurs’ 2-1 pre-season victory over Rangers.

“For sure, I am a coach that does not speak about other players at other teams. I don’t know why. The situation with Tottenham is very clear.

“The plan is very clear with the club. He [Kane] is a part of the project, an important part of the project. At the same time, I don’t like to speak about the players of other clubs.

“If I want to do something, I’ll go and speak with the club and not go through the media. Maybe it is a little disrespectful for the other club. This is my way of dealing with the situation with other players.”

Most Premier League bosses – including Conte – have always refused to discuss potential transfer targets that are currently under contract with other clubs. The same could not be said of Nagelsmann, who decided to operate with a slightly different approach.

Now the ex-Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig head coach finds himself in the frame to take over at Tottenham, where a potential vacancy is expected to be opened up following the sacking of Conte.

Nagelsmann was previously of interest to the Tottenham hierarchy following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in April 2021.

The highly-rated manager caught the eye of Tottenham supporters when his RB Leipzig side dumped Spurs out of the Champions League just before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Timo Werner’s penalty was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for the Bundesliga outfit in north London before Leipzig ran out 3-0 winners over Tottenham in the return fixture – winning the tie comfortably 4-0 on aggregate.

After the away leg, Nagelsmann was keen to praise the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following a successful result, claiming the atmosphere had a real impact on the match.

“It’s a great stadium,” he told BT Sport in February 2020. “The first ten minutes were very noisy, very loud.

“In the end, it was a pleasure to be part of this game and I’m glad we have the win.”

While there are other candidates also in the frame, Nagelsmann now looks a serious contender for the Tottenham hot-seat as he ticks multiple boxes for Daniel Levy, who must now get this appointment right.
