Mum of Man Utd target Rabiot known for wild antics including Mbappe dad bust-up

The mum of Manchester United target Adrien Rabiot once took aim at the families of Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe during one of many strange incidents during her time in football.

Veronique Rabiot took charge of her son's career after his dad Michael Provost had an accident that caused him serious injuries back in 2007 – after which she became the youngster's agent.

Having been discovered by Manchester City scouts back in 2008, the pair lived in England for six months before returning to France where his career would get underway with PSG.

Veronique's first outburst of many came after he signed professional terms back in 2012, where she wrote to the club and requested a transfer following a row over a media interview done by her son and also a row over her desire to attend a mid-season tour.

Rabiot was then sent out on loan to Toulouse were his mother-agent reportedly wanting to attend all training sessions, with PSG bringing him back into the fold the following year under Laurent Blanc.

Two years later talks over a new deal stalled due to the demands of Veronique, with subsequent talks with Roma breaking down after a meeting with their former sporting director Walter Sabatini over her desire to meet manager Rudi Garcia.

He said at the time: "We had a lunch date. We talked and told him that I already had an agreement with the club. Before getting up, she added something that nobody has translated to me.

"But I understood: I ask for confirmation and I go on a rampage. He wanted to talk to Garcia. I got mad and left. Never must these things ever happen.

"If you give your mother a face-to-face with the coach in a moment you will find her in the locker room."

With a transfer not forthcoming, word spread that Rabiot would refuse a new deal which led to him being cut from their Champions League list – before a U-turn led to terms being agreed.

Demands were then made over his position on the pitch and influence under Blanc – with later talks with Tottenham breaking down over Veronique's demands.

Amid the constant back and forth with his club, Rabiot and his mum first clashed with the France national side in 2016 – the year of his debut.

Rabiot and his mum were not pleased when he only made the squad following an injury to Kante, and two years later decided that he should withdraw from their standby list for the 2018 World Cup.

He said at the time: "If I have decided to withdraw from the list of reservations it is because I consider the choice of the recruiter in my regard does not respond to any sporting logic because for all these years the message was clear, it is the performances in the club that open the doors to the French national team.

"I am a competitor, but also a man and I would like to be considered as such (…) and finally I will assume all the consequences of my choice with the support of family and relatives."

Having been relegated to the PSG reserve team in January of 2019, a month after fans made their feelings clear over the player with a flag that read 'RABIOT BLACKLISTE' the player signed for Juventus that July.

Shortly before the transfer went ahead, after demands over new wages were rejected, Veronique was quoted as saying: "My son is a hostage of the club, he will soon live in prison on bread and water."

Veronique would again be in the headlines as France crashed out of Euro 2020 on penalties following a 3-3 draw against Switzerland in which her son featured.

Veronique was captured by cameras directing a comment at Kylian Mbappe's dad, Wilfried, following the forward's decisive miss in the shootout.

She is thought to have shouted: "It is embarrassing how he struck that, for a player of his level. He hit it too lightly, I hope you are going to scold him."

The Athletic then quoted a source with 'inside knowledge' of the confrontation, who eluded to a previous debate that involved Pogba.

They quote: "Rabiot's mother is known to be very sensitive and very close to her son and she didn’t appreciate what Pogba’s friends were saying about one of Adrien’s touches.

"So she blamed Pogba for the loss of the ball in midfield (leading to Switzerland's third). Then she went to Mbappe’s father, 'You better take care of your son because he has a big head and too much protection from the press and I think he’s arrogant.'

"So it’s a mess and she is well known for that at Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus."

Speaking out about her actions earlier this year, Veronique told Ouest-France: "Everyone makes mistakes throughout their lives.

"People don't realise that footballers are teenagers when they begin [their careers], that they have to grow up as men. They are not robots.

"In Italy, the press says [Rabiot] is bad. He doesn't care about that and he plays every game.

"I would like everyone to know what it takes for a footballer to reach the highest level.

"All they say is: 'They're very well paid' and so on. But people don't know how much sacrifice and mental toughness it takes.

"The image of the child with his mother does not reflect reality at all. I am an authoritarian person, it is true. But not what is described in the media."
