Robert Lewandowski’s Bayern Munich team-mate Thomas Muller has taken to LinkedIn to express his dismay over the Poland star’s Ballon d’Or snub.

Lewandowski missed out to Lionel Messi on the award on Monday night by just 33 points, despite many believing the Munich striker had enjoyed the superior year in 2021.

And now Muller has had his say on the outcome, writing: ‘From a Bavarian, Polish and also from a German point of view, the award of the Ballon d’Or was definitely a disappointment. For some, even a little more.

Thomas Muller wrote about his disappointment on Robert Lewandowski Ballon d’Or snub

‘Although I’ve been in the business for a bit longer and was therefore not really surprised by the outcome (it was similar with Franck Ribery in 2013), the whole thing has formed a thought in me or solidified it again: we have great players in the Bundesliga and do not have to hide.

‘For worldwide recognition, however, further international successes are necessary. This is also a huge motivation for me to throw everything into the balance in order to bring the Champions League back to Munich and to show the football world what is going on. And above all, what German football has to offer.

‘We have the next opportunity to do so next Wednesday in the Champions League game against FC Barcelona. Let’s tackle it!

‘PS: With Lionel Messi, the election was probably the best individualist football has ever produced. So congratulations to Lionel on winning the Ballon d’Or, even if I think that Robert Lewandowski would have deserved more this time.’

In his acceptance speech on Monday, Messi paid tribute to the Bayern Munich star – who won the award for striker of the year – and said that he deserved to win the scrapped 2020 Ballon d’Or.

On Monday, Messi said Lewandowski would have been a worthy winner of the 2020 title

Lewandowski picked up ‘Striker of the Year’ but missed out on the main award of the night

‘Robert, you deserve your Ballon d’Or,’ Messi said. ‘Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner of this award.

‘Hopefully France Football will give you the 2020 Ballon d’Or. We all believe you deserved it and I hope you can have it at home.’

Lewandowski was gracious in defeat, saying on Twitter: ‘Congratulations Leo Messi.

‘Congratulations also to all nominated players! I won Striker of the Year Award and no Player can win an individual award without strongest team and loyal fans behind him. Thank you for your support.’
