Mourinho sacking details – Bale decision, training delayed, dressing room lost
Tottenham announced the sacking of Jose Mourinho on Monday morning with Spurs seventh in the Premier League – five points outside of the top-four places.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy released a statement on the decision, reading: "Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club.
"Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.
"On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution."
According to The Independent, the decision was actually made on Friday night following Tottenham's 2-2 draw with Everton.
Mourinho made the controversial decision to once again leave Gareth Bale out of his starting XI, with the Wales international, who Levy was very keen to bring back to Spurs – and at great cost – named on the bench.
Mourinho reportedly lost the support of the Spurs dressing room in recent weeks, and the board were allegedly reacting to the increasing unrest coming from both the squad and the fans.
According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham training was delayed on Monday morning and players didn't find out about the sacking until the official announcement was made.
Mourinho is expected to receive a severance package worth around £16million.
Ryan Mason will take training this Monday and will work as interim boss until a permanent appointment is made.
Despite conflicting reports on social media, the decision had nothing to do with Spurs announcing it has signed a letter of intent to join the breakaway European Super League.
The announcement on the mid-week competition was made on Sunday evening, with Tottenham revealing they are one of the founding clubs involved in the proposal.
The announcement has been met with much criticism from both fans and established football associations.
