MLS team forced to postpone start of training as massive alligator invades pitch
MLS side Toronto FC had an unexpected visitor to training on Tuesday in the form of a giant green alligator.
The Canadian outfit, who have been based in Florida this season because of Covid-19 rules, encountered the hungry snapper during preparations for their CONCACAF Champions League tie with Cruz Azul.
Florida is well-known for its giant gators, with golf courses a frequent haunt of the state’s favourite snappy chappies.
While it’s unusual to see one taking a walk across a football pitch, we can only assume he was on the hunt for some Gatorade.
Toronto paused the session while their visitor made his way across, with coach Chris Armas able to see the funny side.
He said: "All I can tell you is that there was an alligator – a massive alligator. My players were running towards it as I went the other way.
"We talk about fearless and aggressive around here – but I didn't think we would think about that at this moment.
"It's maybe par for the course here in Florida, by the water.
"It was cool for the guys to see really close up and personal – a cool way to start training."
Unfortunately for Toronto, the alligator did not provide them with the extra inspiration they needed to take a bite out of Cruz Azul.
The Reds lost 3-1 in the first-leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final, and look set to exit the competition.
Jonathan Osorio scored Toronto’s only goal, with former Sunderland man Jozy Altidore unable to find the target.
The second-leg will be played at the Estadio Azetca in Mexico City on May 4th.
