Milner’s "insane" role in three iconic Premier League maulings spotted by fans
The “insane” role that James Milner has played in three iconic Premier League maulings has been spotted by fans following Liverpool’s 5-0 hammering of Manchester United.
Naby Keita and Diogo Jota opened the scoring for the Reds before Mohamed Salah’s hat-trick completed a stunning evening for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Surprisingly, Reds boss Klopp opted to name Milner to start in his side’s three-man midfield at Old Trafford, though he was only able to play 27 minutes before being forced off with injury.
Liverpool are Milner’s fifth Premier League club, with the Englishman having also had spells at Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Manchester City.
As a result of that long career, it may not come as a surprise to learn that Milner has played a role in three of the division’s most iconic matches.
The 35-year-old has started three incredible maulings, for Leeds in 2004 as they were beaten 5-0 by Arsenal, in 2011 as Manchester City claimed a stunning 6-1 win at United and on Sunday for the Reds.
Milner lined up in midfield for the Whites at Highbury as Thierry Henry scored four goals to set Arsenal on their way to a stunning win.
That game came on the Gunners’ run to the Premier League title, in the same campaign that they went unbeaten in the entire season.

Milner played all 90 minutes of that game and also played the majority of City’s astonishing 6-1 win over United at Old Trafford in October 2011.
The Englishman again lined up in midfield and provided the assist for both of Mario Balotelli’s goals, with City also going on to win the title at the end of the season.
His third role in an era-defining Premier League hammering came on Sunday at Old Trafford, though on this occasion he was forced to leave the pitch before the half-hour mark.
