James Milner has named four Liverpool stars in his best ever team-mates XI and even had room to squeeze in Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

The three-time Premier League winner, 36, has enjoyed a decorated career playing for some of the biggest clubs in England.

And despite the world-class talent in Milner's XI, there are still some high-profile omissions – neither Mohamed Salah nor Sadio Mane appear in his star-studded side.

But Liverpool selections did feature heavily in the Englishman's 11 with current team-mates Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk all making the cut.

Partnering the Dutch defender at centre-back is Jonathan Woodgate, a Leeds United team-mate of Milner's who he describes as a "superstar."

"Woody was exceptional at Leeds and so unlucky with injuries, but before that we all thought he was a superstar," Milner told Four Four Two.

"Put it this way: I’m leaving both Rio Ferdinand and Vincent Kompany out of my side, which shows just how much I thought of him.”

Popping up at left-back is Chelsea and England ace Ashley Cole who Milner described as the "fittest footballer around" – high praise indeed from a 36-year-old Premier League regular.

Sitting on the fence in the age-old Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard debate, the Liverpool midfielder has named both in his best XI.

Though he did note the current Aston Villa boss as "the best all-round footballer I’ve ever played with."

Completing the midfield in his preferred 4-3-3 formation is Manchester City legend David Silva, with whom Milner won his maiden Premier League title in 2012.

The silky Spaniard was praised for possessing the ability to "decide a game on his own."

Having been able to snub Mane and Salah from his front three, Milner's attacking options would leave even the greatest Premier League defence quaking.

The former England maestro has opted for Roberto Firmino as his first pick due to his exceptional work rate and incredible ability with the ball at his feet.

Rounding of Milner's best-ever 11, with a staggering 444 Premier League goals between them, are Shearer and Sergio Aguero.

Undoubtedly two of the best forwards in English football, it was Aguero's stoppage-time winner against QPR that handed Man City their first-ever Premier League crown.

"It was hard to know from my angle how good a chance it was," recalls Milner.

"When you saw him pulling his leg back, you had to be confident he was going to hit the back of the net. Fantastic."
