Millwall hooligan branded ‘Jay from Inbetweeners’ after ‘hardest thug’ boast

A former Millwall thug called Ginger Bob was compared to compulsive liar Jay Cartwright after a clip was shared of him reliving his hooligan days.

The tough guy was speaking to James English about the “hardest bloke” he fought.

His opponent was supposedly a giant West Ham fan known as ‘Demolition Chris’ but Bob boasted about knocking him out with a single punch.

Reflecting on his glory days, he told the Anything Goes podcast: “When we played West Ham in 1989 over there (Upton Park) . . . police tried to hold us but we're 700 firm and we pushed the police.

“They had around 300 and saw how many numbers we had so went around a back street to negate the numbers and maybe push us back.

“One of their top fighters was a guy called Demolition Chris, six foot six, steel boots, he had a boiler suit. The police said to me and him 'we'll give you five minutes'.

“He's 6ft 6in, and I'm about 6ft 1in, and it's a bit like the OK Corral, and who gets in first.

“I've always had speed of hand… I got my punch in first, a big one on his chin and knocked him out in one punch.

“I got him first, and done him.”

However, social media users were sceptical about the bonkers story.

One person wrote on TikTok: “Is this Jay Cartwright’s grandad?”

Another said: “Ginger Bob Cartwright.”

A third added: “Ok Jay.”

And a fourth doubter went with: “Should be titled… things that have never happened in my lifetime.”

“What a load of waffle,” a fifth said.

In the video Ginger Bob also said boxers used to tell him his hand speed was “unbelievable” for such a big man.

This could be what inspired the Jay comparisons – after the fictional character once told his pals how his dad fought Muhammad Ali in the amateurs.

Another funny lie was when he told Simon, Neil and Will: “I knew him from when I was doing trials at West Ham.”

Meanwhile, Ginger Bob was once a leading member of Millwall's Bushwacker firm and he started brawling in the streets at the age of 15.

And as for his wild stories about their foes in East London, he insisted that he was the one speaking truth rather than fiction.

He said: “The problem we have with West Ham is that they never admit when they get done.

“We admit to it – there's stuff I'm saying now that they think I'm talking fairytales.”

He spoke to James English for a 90 minute walk down memory lane where he revealed the toughest firm he ever faced.

“I’ve got to give it to Cardiff City,” he said.

“Cardiff had an around 3-4,000-person-strong firm while Millwall – with around 300 – had nowhere to run. My mates thought they were going to die.

“The best row I had ever seen was on March 18, 1976.

“We had 300 firm and they had 2,000… and some of our people were getting stabbed.

“One of my friends got captured by Cardiff and he was being beaten to death. . . so I've gone back into Cardiff's firm and pulled him along the floor.

“Because of the adrenaline I managed to pull him back, but when we got back to the station Cardiff's firm and the police were all laughing.”

He claimed only 50 of them then got on an empty train before they later went up against 2,000 Welsh blokes.

Bob said: “We kicked the gates in, ran riot, and smashed all the pubs up. The police had to come back and force us back.

“That was a day before my 18th birthday – it was just like the Wild West.”
