Middlesbrough fan arrested for ‘leaving son, 11, in hotel’ to celebrate win

A Middlesbrough fan has been arrested for child neglect after allegedly leaving his son in a hotel room so that he could go out celebrating Boro's victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup.

The Championship club caused a major upset by dumping United of the competition on penalties on Friday evening.

Anthony Elanga missed the crucial spot-kick as Ralf Rangnick's side exited the tournament at the fourth-round stage.

Elanga's error sparked wild celebrations in the away end at Old Trafford, where just over 9,000 Middlesbrough fans were situated.

Some supporters chose to go out on the town to celebrate, including one who allegedly left his 11-year-old child in a hotel room to do so.

In a tweet posted on social media, Greater Manchester Police confirmed the fan had been arrested for child neglect.

GMP Stretford said: "Boro away fan arrested for child neglect last night, after choosing to leave his 11yr child in the hotel after the game whilst he went into town celebrating their victory drinking.

"We have looked after the child with an unhappy mum on her way down from N/East to collect him."

The government's website provides guidance when it comes to a parent leaving a child alone.

It reads that the "law does not say an age when you can leave a child on their own, but it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk".

It advises parents to "use your judgement on how mature your child is before you decide to leave them alone, for example at home or in a car".

However, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) says that children under 12 are "rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time".

While it adds that "children under 16 should not be left alone overnight".
