Michael Owen’s 2014 tweet resurfaces as daughter Gemma appears on Love Island

A tweet sent by Michael Owen from 2014 has resurfaced after his daughter made an appearance on this year’s Love Island.

The reality TV show, which features sending a mix of young men and women who fly off to live on an exotic island to find romance, sometimes features very minor celebrities or family members of celebrities. This season’s edition is no different, with former Liverpool goalscorer Owen’s daughter Gemma being a contestant.

As the show began its first episode on Monday night, a tweet from eight years ago was retweeted by fans who thought it was very apt. It was sent after England lost 2-1 to Uruguay at 2014 World Cup – but, indeed, some felt it was very appropriate considering what they were watching last night. Owen had tweeted: “Going to bed. Can't take the pain any longer.”

And some decided to turn it into something of a joke. “It’s only been on 20 mins mate calm down,” one replied.

Another said: “Michael Owen at 8:59pm every week night for the next 10 weeks.”

A third said: “Man has had enough of his daughter already.”

A fourth quipped: “ Michael Owen is half of the nation right now,”

On the show, Gemma kissed Italian Davide Sanclimenti during a game of dares but she was paired up with student Liam Llewellyn.

Meanwhile, father Owen has left the country to head to Germany. England face off in Munich against the side for their Nations League contest on Tyesday. Arriving at the Allianz Arena, Owen posted on Instagram: “Back at the scene of the crime 21 years later! Germany 1 – 5 England.”

Indeed, in 2001 England managed to overcome the Germans 5-1 in the qualifying stages of the 2002 World Cup. Owen scored a hat-trick and Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard also got on the scoresheet as Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men ran riot.
