Michael Carrick set for first manager’s job after ‘making U-turn after talks’

Michael Carrick is reportedly set to be named Middlesbrough's new manager in a sensational U-turn after turning down the role last week.

Boro approached Carrick for the vacant role following the sacking of Chris Wilder, who was given the boot at the start of October following a dismal run of results. But the 41-year-old ruled himself out of the running after meeting with Boro chairman Steve Gibson.

However, Boro's hierarchy remained undeterred and continued to pursue the Manchester United legend, And it seems their persistence has paid off as Carrick is said to have changed his stance – and is now on the brink of being unveiled as the Championship side's new boss, The Sun reported.

It will be Carrick's first foray into management since he was relieved of a temporary role in charge at Old Trafford. The former England international had a short stint as United boss when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked, after being part of the Norwegian's coaching staff.

But he stepped away from the dugout when Ralf Rangnick took the reins at United, and has been out of management ever since. Although the die hard United fan was spotted in the stands with Red Devils supporters in the club's 2-1 win over Everton in October.

Boro will be hoping the United icon who played 464 times for United, won five Premier League titles and earned a Champions League medal, will be able to use his expertise to hoist them back from the depths of the Championship table.
