Manchester United legend Roy Keane has reportedly considering an offer to make an emotional return to Sunderland as manager, but judging by Micah Richards’ light-hearted comments, the players could be in for a shock. The League One outfit sacked Lee Johnson after 14 months in charge following the 6-0 drubbing by Bolton on Saturday.

With Sunderland gunning for promotion and currently third, The Telegraph have reported Keane, 50, is in line to return to the dugout for the first time in over a decade as a manager.

The Irishman was first appointed by the Black Cats back in 2006 and led them to the Championship title in his first campaign in charge.

That saw them promoted to the Premier League, with Sunderland finishing 15th in their first year back in the top flight.

But he was sacked in 2008 after leaving the club in the relegation zone, bringing the curtain down on his two-year spell at the helm in his first management job.

Despite that, Keane had a respectable 42 per-cent win percentage during his time at the Stadium of Light and is well respected by the fans.

His next job saw him spend two years with Ipswich Town before leaving the post in 2011, and Keane has not worked as a first-team boss since.

After a spell working alongside Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland as an assistant manager, Keane has gained popularity for his no-nonsense approach as a football pundit.

His straight-talking style has provided many memorable moments on Sky Sports’ coverage — particularly when Manchester United lose a game.

And his punditry partner, Micah Richards, joked that his controversial views on the Man United dressing room would have made him an unsuitable choice as the club’s manager.

Back in November 2021, when discussing Man United’s potential choices as their next interim coach, Robbie Keane threw his namesake Roy Keane’s name into the hat.

“Give it Keane. Give it Keane till the end of the season,” Richards joked, as quoted by The Mirror.

When asked if Keane teaming up with Gary Neville would be the “dream” partnership, Richards responded: “No, it wouldn’t be the dream. Probably not at this time.

“I think Roy Keane would be a great manager. I’m not saying he couldn’t do it.

“I’m talking about the relationship with the players, he’s slagged off half the dressing room.”

Still, it appears Keane is on course to secure a return to football management in the not-too-distant future after recently revealing he has held talks over vacant roles.

“I’ve had interviews, I had an interview recently,” Keane told his former United colleague Gary Neville on The Overlap.

“I spoke to a Championship club about three months ago. It was very casual, it was at my house, a chat with the chairman.

“And to be fair, he was straight up, he went, ‘Listen, we just want somebody who can come in and win football matches’.

“That was fine with me, I didn’t have to break down styles of play.”
