Ashley Williams fell asleep during a night out in Qatar, so naturally his BBC pundit friends teased him mercilessly for the offence.

Micah Richards and Rio Ferdinand were at the head of the mockery, filming Williams – who did not move at all, despite the ensuing madness, which saw them place beer caps, chopsticks and a menu on him while he slept in his chair.

Richards shared the footage to his Instagram story, with the caption ‘Sleeping on the job’, as close-ups revealed the items placed upon the former Wales defender as he slumbered.

Another video showed the crew, which also included Dion Dublin and Jermaine Jenas, ‘dying with laughter’, as they continued to stack the miscellaneous group of items on Williams – and yet still, the former Swansea City centre-back did not seem to be affected in any way.

Ferdinand shared his own footage to Instagram as well, captioning his post with the phrase ‘Too much sun & too much work’. The former Manchester United defender revealed ‘It’s his first day off, and look at him.’ Everyone sat around him was laughing uproariously, but Williams did not move at all.

Ferdinand commented on the situation, saying: ‘Man’s got a day off and said “Nah, this is me, I’m out.”.’

Richards chimed in, saying: ‘He’s been working overtime!’

A second video from Ferdinand said ‘The diaphragm is under stress’, with the amount of items put upon the sleeping Williams – which was later reshared by both Richards and Jenas on the social media platform.

The BBC continue to show live matches from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, sharing the rights with ITV.

BBC One will be broadcasting Wales against England on Tuesday night, in what is a crucial match for both sides with a view to making it out of Group B and into the knockout rounds.

While the tournament so far has had a fair share of sleep-inducing affairs, hopefully Williams will be able to keep himself awake when he returns to the BBC’s coverage.
