Memphis Depay ‘receives offer’ from Chelsea as Man Utd flop nears Barcelona exit

Memphis Depay could return to the Premier League and end up playing against his former club Manchester United amid reported Deadline Day interest from Chelsea.

The 28-year-old looks to be surplus to requirements at Barcelona following their summer spending spree with Xavi's bosses looking to shift some stars off the payroll.

Having also been linked with a return to Old Trafford, the Netherlands international might now need to consider whether he wants to move to Stamford Bridge with just hours of the window remaining.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Depay's move to Chelsea could be the final shock of the transfer widow with the club a 'very real option' for the forward.

They report that he has had an offer from Chelsea as Barcelona look to shift their squad around before the deadline, with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang already on his way to London.

Depay's departure would give Xavi less of a conundrum up front with Robert Lewandowski, Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres and Ousmane Dembele among those battling for playing time.

Xavi had said of Depay earlier in the year: “I’m not talking about the future, I’m talking about the present and the matches to come.

"Memphis is playing today because he had a fantastic week of training, another would have given up and he didn’t, we need players with that attitude."

Depay has scored 13 goals for the club since his 2021 switch from Lyon, having struggled at United and lasting only one full season back in 2015/16.

He said of that period after leaving: "Back in Manchester, I was not happy with myself. How can I be a great football player when you're not happy with yourself?

"I looked in the mirror and I was not happy, I was sad. Now I'm happy to be myself. I'm not arrogant, but I need to be more consistent, perhaps."
