Meghan’s fans blast claims Ashley Cole "dodged a bullet" after she chose Harry

Meghan Markle's fans have slammed claims ex-footballer Ashley Cole "dodged a bullet" after the Duchess reportedly turned him down before dating Prince Harry.

Last week a story about their potential romance, after Cole had split with Cheryl, had resurfaced and sent royal fans into meltdown.

Meghan is alleged to have said the ex-England and Chelsea star was "trying really hard" to speak to her online.

It was claimed the Duchess told a British journalist: “He follows me and he keeps trying to talk to me on Twitter. He’s trying really hard.

“He wants to go out on a date while I’m over here in London. What do you think? Do you know him?”

But it is alleged that she revealed "some friends" had told her to stay away, which she did.

Her romance with Harry then sparked a dramatic few years in British royal life, with the couple stepping down as senior royals before blasting the firm in a notorious Oprah interview, dividing fans along the way.

It led to one to say last week: "Dodged a bullet there!"

Another said: "He was the lucky one."

But they were met with the wrath of Meghan's fans, who argued she had made the smart choice.

One wrote: "Good to know she has standards. Cole doesn't hold a candle to Prince Harry."

Another added: "With her on that one."

And a fellow fan said "he's nothing like Harry" before another opined "good for her".

Cole denied he ever chased after the former US actress, with brother Matty Cole telling The Sun: “It’s nonsense, completely made up.

"He definitely wouldn’t have to beg Meghan Markle for a date. She’s not the kind of girl he goes for anyway, and he’s never fancied her.”

But TV personality Lizzy Cundy appeared to confirm the allegations after the article was written in 2017, writing: “She said, ‘I want a British boyfriend,’ so I said ‘What, a celebrity?’ and she went, ‘Yeah, why not?’” she told the married presenting duo."

She added: “But I did actually say, ‘Do you like footballers?’ because they were on my phone. I said ‘Do you want to have a look through?’

“And (I thought) Ashley Cole – because he’d just split up from Cheryl – and they looked quite similar, they were dark, petite.

“I said ‘He might like you.’ I was getting that together! I made a call to Ashley saying ‘What do you reckon?’ and he was like ‘Who is she?’”
