Is Tony here to stay?

Since the World Cup, Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson has been floated as a possible candidate to coach the US women’s national team.

Here’s what he had to say when he was asked about it this week:

Read more about it here.

Kerr’s minutes to be managed

Sam Kerr appears unlikely to start against Iran tonight and will not play a full 90 minutes in Australia’s three Olympic qualifiers in Perth.

When asked about the ‘Kerr plan’ this week, coach Tony Gustavsson cited load management as the reason for limiting her minutes as his captain continues her comeback from the calf injury that cruelled much of her World Cup campaign.

Who is on the team?

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson named a full-strength team two weeks ago for three Olympic qualifiers, and we’re getting most of our favourites back.

Except for Kyah Simon and Aivi Luik who were unavailable through injury, it’s the same team that came placed fourth at this year’s World Cup.

The Matildas’ final squad: Mackenzie Arnold, Ellie Carpenter, Steph Catley (VC), Alex Chidiac, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Katrina Gorry, Charlotte Grant, Clare Hunt, Alanna Kennedy, Sam Kerr (C), Teagan Micah, Courtney Nevin, Clare Polkinghorne, Hayley Raso, Charlize Rule (development), Amy Sayer, Emily van Egmond, Cortnee Vine, Clare Wheeler, Lydia Williams, Tameka Yallop

Matildas’ Olympic qualifiers:

Welcome

Good evening football fans, and welcome to our live coverage of the first of three Olympic qualifiers for the Matildas.

Doesn’t it feel good to be back?

It’s been nine long weeks since Australia’s favourite team made history at the World Cup earlier this year, but the wait is finally over.

The Matildas take on IR Iran from 10pm (AEDT) tonight, so strap in, dust off the jersey, and let’s get ready for the action.
