Matildas mauled again as Aussie golden girls sink to sad low

The Matildas have conceded five goals for the second straight game after suffering a 5-0 defeat to the Netherlands on Wednesday morning (AEDT).

It’s the Australians’ worst defeat since going down to Chile by the same scoreline 13 years ago, and the first time in 26 years they have let five goals past the keeper in consecutive matches.

The heavy defeat comes on the back of a 5-2 loss to Germany in Australia’s return to international competition on the weekend, as they prepare for this year’s Tokyo Olympics.

The unsettling results have slugged pressure on new coach Tony Gustavsson, who is only two games into his reign.

Former Matilda Michelle Heyman told Fox Sports: “I think he needs to adjust, I think he needs to change something because it’s just not good enough.

“We’re a quality team and we want to be gold medal contenders and we want to win the Olympics and will not be able to do that with that type of performance, so something needs to change.

“I know there’s COVID restrictions right now but we need to bring more Australian-based footballers in the mix and there’s people out there that deserve the opportunity.”

Captain Sam Kerr has been on fire for English club Chelsea of late, scoring goals at will, but not even she has been able to provide the spark the national team has been missing in the past two matches.

The game against Germany was the Matildas’ first outing in more than 12 months, because of the pandemic, and while rustiness was expected, giving away 10 goals in two games would not have been.

Fox Sports football reporter James Dodd tweeted: “Another bruising encounter for the Matildas this morning. Two tough opponents to kick-start the Gustavsson era but conceding 10 goals in two games is poor by anyone’s standards.”

The Dutch had five different goalscorers as they ran riot over the girls in green and gold. It took just five minutes for Jill Roord to open the scoring and the home side slotted two more goals before halftime.

Two goals in the space of three minutes midway through the second stanza put the exclamation mark on the result.

The Matildas now wait for next week’s Olympics draw to see what their campaign in Tokyo will look like.
