Sweden's Marcus Danielson was dismissed for a horror challenge on Ukraine's Artem Besyedin which left him needing treatment during their Euro 2020 last 16 tie at Hampden Park.

The Dalian Professional defender, who was making his 13th appearance for his country, went in on the Dynamo Kyiv forward with eyes for the ball but watched his studs crunch the knee of his opponent.

Despite his complaints that VAR intervened, the replay was not pretty and he was given his matching orders by referee Daniele Orsato during the first-half of extra time, with Ukraine going on to win 2-1.

BBC Sport pundit Martin Keown said: "Look how high that tackle is. Danielson might complain but when he sees that back it's a horror challenge."

The incident came after Oleksandr Zinchenko lashed Ukraine in front with Emil Forsberg hitting a deflected equaliser during the first-half in Scotland.

Danielson became just the fourth player to be sent off during extra-time in a European Championship, with Besedin left limping off the pitch with an ice pack strapped to his leg.

That was the first of many injuries coming in the closing stages, which wouldn't come as bad news to England who Ukraine for a place in the last four.

Despite the red being welcomed by many, Gary Lineker didn't agree on Twitter.

He wrote: "When you kick a football it’s almost impossible not to follow through (not that kind of follow through btw).

"Just because a player gets injured because someone kicked a football and accidentally catches him on the follow through doesn’t make it a foul, let alone a red."

Piers Morgan then added: "Says the bloke who never tackled. It was a recklessly high challenge that could have broken his opponent’s leg. Definite red card."

The red card turned out to cost Sweden, with Ukraine going on to score a last-gasp winner through Artem Dovbyk, who headed home from close range.

That puts them into the quarter-final against England on Saturday, who beat Germany with goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane earlier in the day.
