Manchester United star has shown Bruno Fernandes up again after 9-0 Southampton win

Man Utd: Solskjaer warns Fernandes to ‘not boil over’

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes once joked that he didn’t know Aaron Wan-Bissaka could shoot. And the former Crystal Palace star has shown his team-mate up for a second time this season by opening the scoring against Southampton on Tuesday night. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side delivered a blistering display, picking up all three points and moving level with fierce rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table inthe process.

Manchester United went into the game against Southampton seeking a return to winning ways.

After dropping points against Sheffield United and Arsenal, they knew a defeat or draw would have represented a huge blow to their hopes of winning the Premier League title.

And United capitalised on an early Southampton red card for Alexandre Jankewitz to claim victory.

Wan-Bissaka opened the scoring with a prodded finish from close range and, in doing so, has proved Fernandes wrong again.

Speaking in January, the right-back revealed Fernandes had claimed he was unaware he could shoot in a dressing room chat.

“Bruno helps everyone – on and off the pitch,” he said.

“He tells me before the game what he thinks I should do and which positions he thinks I should get into when he gets the ball, and where I should be.

“He has done it with the other players, and I can see that, along with the impact that he has made.

“When I scored my goal [against Newcastle], he said he couldn’t believe I could shoot! That goal there was to show him!”

And Wan-Bissaka has now shown him again.

The United star has scored twice this season and it’s a part of his game Solskjaer will want him to continue to improve as the club goes in search of title glory.

After Wan-Bissaka scored, the floodgates opened.

Southampton found themselves being ran ragged by their Red Devils counterparts, who doubled their lead through Marcus Rashford.

Rashford thumped the ball past Alex McCarthy from close range, meaning he was on target in the Premier League for the first time since a 1-0 win over Wolves at the end of December.

A Jan Bednarek own goal made it three and the Red Devils added a fourth before half time, with Edinson Cavani finding the net via a header.

And, in the closing stages, Anthony Martial (x2), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James got in on the act.

For United, it’s a result that sees them move level on points with City at the top of the table.

But with Pep Guardiola’s side having two games in hand, the crown is very much theirs to lose at the current moment in time.

Solskjaer had admitted before the contest that United were looking to improve, saying: “Of course we want to improve.

“We took the performance against Arsenal as a step forward. We were creating chances again and we felt we should have won it.

“We’ve reacted well to the setback against Sheffield United and the momentum should be going our way again.”

Solskjaer also praised United’s staff for all their hard work, insisting they’ve been doing everything right behind the scenes.

“The staff are brilliant,” he said.

“The medical staff, the sports science staff, and the boys look after themselves, of course.

“But I think the players have learned, they are physically more robust. We have upped the training last season and during pre-season and the lockdown.

“Mentally, as well, we’re more prepared for a quick turnaround and, of course, we have a deep and a strong squad; full of quality with the attitude, the character to always want to play.

“So a little niggle won’t stop anyone. Sometimes, the rotation has helped us get through without injuries.”
