Manchester United star David De Gea reacts to breaking record ahead of Burnley clash

Man Utd: Should De Gea or Henderson start?

Manchester United star David De Gea has reacted to breaking a club record. The Spain international recently etched his name into the history books by making the most Premier League appearances by a non-British player. And he’s expected to get the nod for the Red Devils’ crunch Premier League showdown with Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

United signed De Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2011, with the Spain international arriving as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar.

He initially experienced teething problems in English football but helped the club win the Premier League title in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Since then, De Gea has been a regular fixture in the United side – making 424 appearances across all competitions.

A huge 327 of them have come in the Premier League, with the 30-year-old now having clocked up more league appearances than any other non-British player for the club.

And De Gea, speaking to United’s official website, has reacted by vowing there’s more to come.

“I’m very, very proud to reach that number of games,” he said. “It’s great for me.

“I feel good, confident and proud. I’ve played a lot of games but hopefully like I said there are many more to come.

“I feeling very well. I’m training hard, feeling sharp and confident in the games.

“When you feel well and train well then in the games it’s easy to play.

“You have to be focused of course and always play at 100 per cent and helping the team is the most important thing. The team is winning and in good form so everything at the moment is good.”

De Gea is expecting Burnley to pose problems on Tuesday night, but has called on for United to stake their title credentials at Turf Moor.

“Yes I have been fighting for the title in a couple of seasons when Sir Alex was here. Now we are there again and it’s taken us a lot of time to get there to be honest and we cannot miss this chance,” he said.

“We have to be very, very focused in every game and try to win all of them.

“Hopefully if we are good physically and mentally then we can be there and we can fight for sure for the Premier League.

“It’s true there is a lot to play yet, but of course it’s a chance to be there, to be top of the league.

“It’s a good challenge for us. We will play against a difficult team in Burnley, away from home, but if we want to win the league then we have to win these type of matches.

“I’m saying the same thing, but all we can do is focus on each match, take it game-by-game and be 100 per cent focused.”

Ahead of the match, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down his side’s chances of winning the title.

“We’re not even halfway through the season and every game in the Premier League is a challenge, they’re tests,” Solskjaer said.

“Every game is a different test. Watford, they gave us a test, Burnley is a test, Liverpool is another, then you go to Fulham which is a different test again.

“No-one will remember how the league table looked like on 12 January 2021. We have good momentum, started well again after the disappointment of [losing to Manchester] City, bounced back really well with a win [against Watford] and of course we want to build momentum again.

“If we can get a win on Tuesday then that’s two games on the bounce and we can go into the next game confident. Every game in the Premier League is a chance to build more confidence.”
