Manchester United are unwilling to spend any more than £39million on the signing of Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, according to reports. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already secured the services of Jadon Sancho. But he knows his team need more strengthening if they’re to win the Premier League title next season, having gone without the prize since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Manchester United mean business.

The Glazers are determined to prove they’re worthy of owning the club by giving Solskjaer the transfer backing he craves this summer.

So far, it’s been a positive start.

The Red Devils announced on Thursday they’d agreed a deal to sign Sancho from Dortmund, four years after they’d first tried to bring the England international to Old Trafford.

They then followed that up with another announcement on Friday, with Tom Heaton returning to the club to compete with David De Gea and Dean Henderson for a starting berth.

Now, they’re hopeful Varane will be the next recruit in the door.

Yet Catalan newspaper Sport claim that United, having spent £73m on Sancho already, don’t want to pay any more than £39m when it comes to bringing the 2018 World Cup winner to Old Trafford.

Varane has just one year left on his current contract, meaning he’ll be allowed to leave for nothing in 12 months’ time.

And United seem to think £39m is a fair amount to pay as a result, with the club mindful of their finances in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

Real, however, would prefer to do business for a fee in the region of £45m instead – determined to get as much money as they look to raise funds for Kylian Mbappe.

It’s claimed by the publication that, at present, the Real Madrid star has offers from the Red Devils and Paris Saint-Germain on the table.

But Varane must first demand a move away from the Bernabeu, something that’s yet to happen.

Real have offered the France international the captaincy following Sergio Ramos’ departure, with the Spain international on the cusp of joining PSG on a free transfer.

Yet that doesn’t look like it’ll be enough to retain the former Lens star, who has won every major trophy since moving to the Bernabeu a decade ago.

ESPN pundit Frank Leboeuf recently opened up on Varane, expressing a belief he should reconsider a move to United given the club’s plight since Ferguson’s retirement eight years ago.

“We know the history of Man United but we are talking about the past,” he said.

“They finished in second place in the league but I’m not sure it’s a goal for everyone to go to Manchester United now unless they have three or four new signings coming in as well so they can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

“I don’t know what Raphael Varane’s goal is but I’d have some questions before going to Manchester United.”

Nicky Butt, meanwhile, recently endorsed his old team’s pursuit of Varane.

“For me, next season has to be about getting some silverware back in that trophy cabinet for Manchester United,” Butt said.

“It’s about getting the right players who will allow you to challenge for trophies.

“It’s a winning club, so we can’t go this long without silverware.

“The biggest thing that needs addressing for me at Manchester United this summer is that centre-back position; we need a partner for Harry Maguire.

“It has to be someone that’s going to be compatible with Maguire.

“If you spend the kind of money you did on Harry Maguire, you then have to follow it up by bringing someone in who can play with him.

“He’s the club captain; Victor Lindelof is too similar to him. It needs to be someone with pure, blistering pace, someone who can play out from the back.

“Everyone talks about Raphael Varane. I understand he’s a little bit older than most people would perhaps like, but you just have to go back to the days of Teddy Sheringham.

“I think we bought him when he was 32, and we went and won the treble with him. If Varane is available, then I’d go all out for him.”
