Manchester United see the potential signing of Saul Niguez as ‘one of the biggest opportunities’, it has been claimed. The Atletico Madrid star has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford. And a summer switch could finally take place, despite Liverpool and Barcelona also emerging as possible suitors.

Manchester United have made a positive start to their transfer business this summer.

Tom Heaton was the first player to arrive, with the veteran moving back to Old Trafford from Aston Villa.

United then splurged £73million on Jadon Sancho, who arrives four years after Jose Mourinho first tried to snap him up.

And, just last week, the Red Devils announced they had an agreement in principle for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Now, a midfielder is next on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar as he looks to steer his side to Premier League title glory next time out.

And Fabrizio Romano, speaking to The United Stand, has claimed the Red Devils see the potential signing of Saul as ‘one of the biggest opportunities of the market’.

“Manchester United are among the clubs that have been in contact with Saúl Niguez’s agent – they have an interest in the player and consider him ‘one of the biggest opportunities on the market’,” he said.

“€40-45m will get a deal done, no bid yet.”

Romano also revealed United were considering a deal for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who has been linked with a move away in recent weeks.

“Ruben Neves is one of the players Manchester United are considering in case they move for a midfielder this summer,” he said.

“Neves is on the potential list for United, with Arsenal also looking at the opportunity to sign him.

“It is still an open race for Ruben Neves – he is not desperate to leave Wolves.

“If the right bid arrives, him leaving is a serious possibility – if not, he stays. Neves to United is a possibility, but it is not advanced as of today.”

While United are hoping to make a couple more signings before the transfer window shuts, they could also embark on a selling spree.

Anthony Martial’s future remains uncertain, with the France international blowing hot and cold throughout his time at the club so far.

Likewise Daniel James who, following the arrival of Sancho from Dortmund, may struggle for action on the right wing.

Andreas Pereira is likely to be jettisoned, despite the Brazil international’s recent thunderbolt goal against Brentford.

And Jesse Lingard, Brandon Williams, Diogo Dalot, Alex Telles and Phil Jones are all currently facing uncertain futures as well.

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Ray Parlour thinks United signing Varane should help Solskjaer’s young team scale new heights.

“Man City were so good defensively last year. That’s what they really improved on,” he said.

“Ruben Dias came in and you never really know what sort of situation you’re going to have with a player whether he settles or not.

“But he settled so well in the Premier League and John Stones got better alongside him.

“So if Varane can be very similar to how Ruben Dias settled in to the Premier League then they’ve got a fantastic defence.”

Parlour is also excited by the prospect of Varane partnering Harry Maguire at the back.

He said: “Most Manchester United fans will be very excited about Varane coming in. They’ve always looked for someone alongside Harry Maguire.

“If they can get someone of his experience, 79 caps for France, he’s been there and done it. He’s played in big, big games. He’s a World Cup winner. It’s an excellent signing.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surely can’t complain that he hasn’t been backed. He’s got Sancho and now Varane. It puts a little bit more pressure on him as a manager.

“If I look at some of the back fours of the top teams in the Premier League, Man City have got a great back four, Liverpool’s back four is superb.

“That was the big improvement for Man City last year, how John Stones and Ruben Dias really played well together. They had a really good understanding.

“If Manchester United can get that right as well because Harry Maguire doesn’t miss many games, he had the injury towards the end of last season, but he played every single game before that.

“So if you can put him and Varane together, I’m sure they’d be working on a good partnership.”
