Manchester United could be about to sign their own version of Xabi Alonso in Rennes star Eduardo Camavinga. The 18-year-old has emerged as a transfer target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. And though PSG appear to be his preferred destination, a move to Old Trafford may be on the cards.

Manchester United are nearing a deal for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

They also want to sign Raphael Varane, and they’re eyeing Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier.

But, over the past 24 hours, the club’s interest in Rennes teenager Camavinga has surfaced – with a meeting reportedly planned for this week.

At present, the 18-year-old’s preference is to remain in France with Paris Saint-Germain. He’s keep to stay in his homeland, especially with three caps to his name.

But United are keen to snap him up and believe they stand a chance at securing his signature.

If they do, then the Red Devils could be signing their own version of Spain international Alonso – which makes him an exciting prospect.

It was Nantes star Cristian Benavente who made the comparison last year, saying: “He has caught my attention a lot.

“I would emphasise that he is always well marked when it comes to receiving the ball and moving forward and that, at his age, is very difficult.

“He does not lose the ball in congested areas, he is reliable with short, medium and long passes and, with the ball at his feet, he can break lines with his drives forward.

“He has an air of Xabi Alonso about him.”

Alonso was a huge hit during his time in the Premier League with Liverpool, helping the Reds win the Champions League trophy in 2005.

He then flourished at Real Madrid and later Bayern Munich and is widely regarded as one of the classiest players from within the game over the past two decades.

United, at present, have many good midfielders on their books.

But Camavinga is different to each of them, being a commanding defensive midfielder and somebody comfortable on the ball as well.

Should United sign him, it’s likely he’d go into the first team straight away.

And it would show the Red Devils are ready to make amends for missing out on Jude Bellingham, who was targeted by the club last summer only to end up at Borussia Dortmund instead.

EURO 2020: England’s five positives, two negatives from Czech Republic win

Camavinga failed to make France’s squad for Euro 2020 and, speaking in May, Didier Deschamps opened up on the player’s recent struggles for form.

“He has had a complicated, very complicated time, for different reasons, certainly,” he said.

“After what he was able to show with us when he came, well yes, that can happen… He is a young player, (what he showed with us) did not translate into performances with his club, for various reasons.

“If you look, even with the U21s last March, he started the first game, but didn’t start the next two.

“His potential and what he is capable of, what he has done with us, and what he has done since, obviously there’s a big difference.

“Potentially, he’s not supposed to drift from the scene either, after that it is up to him to look at the various elements to see what made his performances less strong.”

Camavinga previously said he was flattered by links to teams such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“My future? I’ve not yet thought it over with my family,” said the 18-year-old.

“I am first concentrating on Rennes. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich interest is something nice, I can’t lie.

“It’s nice that big clubs have interest, but I’m not focused on that.”
