Manchester United have turned down the chance to sign four players since John Murtough’s arrival at Old Trafford, according to reports. The Red Devils are primed to back Erik ten Hag in this summer’s transfer window. And they’re hoping to have learned from the mistakes of the past.
United announced Murtough’s appointment a year ago, with the 51-year-old joining at the same time as Darren Fletcher.
And while the Red Devils have just experienced a chastening season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, they’re hopeful they’re on the right track to a better and brighter future.
In the past, United have been guilty of not conducting enough research on their targets.
But The Telegraph say that, since Murtough’s appointment, the Red Devils have walked away from at last four players over the past 12 months.
No names are specified.
Yet it’s noted that United opted against their signings after seeing ‘red flags’ when researching the quartet.
Erik ten Hag: Man Utd’s 25-man squad for next season with six signings
In recent years, the Red Devils have seen a host of big-name players fail to live up to expectations.
United thought Angel Di Maria would be a key signing when they brought him in from Real Madrid back in the summer transfer window of 2014, when Louis van Gaal was manager.
Yet the Argentina international never wanted to move to the Premier League and left for Paris Saint-Germain after just one year.
Radamel Falcao also arrived in 2014 but, with four goals to his name, was sent back to Monaco.
United thought the likes of Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger would be hits under Van Gaal, too.

But the duo never lived up to high hopes before leaving for Lyon and Chicago Fire respectively.
United have announced Paul Pogba is leaving the club after six years.
Yet while the 2018 World Cup winner had his moments, he was never the transformative signing the Red Devils hoped he would be.
And, since Pogba, United have also failed to see the best of big signings such as Alexis Sanchez, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek.
Even Jadon Sancho, for all of his talent and potential, is yet to justify the club’s £73million outlay.

And whether they get their recruitment right in the future remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, former United star John O’Shea has had his say on what awaits under new boss Ten Hag.
And he feels his old side must get their recruitment right if the Dutchman is to succeed where his predecessors have failed.
“Everyone knows it’s going to be a huge challenge,” he said.
“You need results too. It’s going to be a case of what players he can get in. That will ultimately be the key.

“He looks like he has got that hunger and appetite to really compete at the top from his first press conference, which I thought was quite impressive.”
And, when quizzed on Pogba, he added: “I played with Paul a long time ago and obviously he was super talented back then.
“I am sure he is hoping that he finds that consistent level of performance that he wasn’t able to find at different stages of the season.
“Unfortunately, he had a few injuries and couldn’t get back to that level.
“I think it’s gotten to the point where a fresh start for everyone is probably the best scenario.”
