Manchester United have 'NOTHING about them', says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher rips into Manchester United, claiming they have ‘NOTHING about them’ and there’s ‘not a lot to like’ about Ralf Rangnick’s squad… as Liverpool legend reveals their ‘flat’ team remind him of Roy Hodgson’s time in charge at Anfield

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United have ‘nothing about them’ this season, admitting the ‘flat’ team remind him of his struggling Liverpool side under Roy Hodgson in the 2010-11 campaign.

Manchester United are facing a huge battle just to finish in the top four this season after some woeful results, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer losing his job and successor Ralf Rangnick struggling to galvanise the players since.

The Red Devils travel to Aston Villa this Saturday desperately looking for a win after a dismal 1-0 home loss to Wolves in their last Premier League game – with their performance earning them some stern criticism from fans and pundits.

The Liverpool legend believes the team are lacking ‘energy and fluidity’ on the pitch

And Carragher feels they offer very little on the pitch, claiming there is ‘not a lot to like’ about the team, who have ‘no passion or emotion’ – saying they are reminiscent of when Liverpool stuttered under the leadership of Hodgson.

That season saw the Reds lose their way and fall out of the top four race, with Hodgson being sacked in January.

‘[This] United team had promise, exciting young talents, and enough goals in the team to maintain the hope that flaws and inconsistencies could eventually be eradicated,’ he said in his column on the Telegraph. ‘Ultimately, they did not have enough to challenge for the Premier League title.

‘What might worry United supporters now is when watching their side over the last few weeks, they remind me of Liverpool under Roy Hodgson.

Carragher feels there is ‘not much to like’ about United, despite boasting some big names

‘There is nothing about them; no passion, no emotion; every game seems flat; they lack energy and fluidity; the players are visibly not enjoying their football.

‘There is a highly respected football figure in charge, but it has taken a matter of weeks to make it obvious Ralf Rangnick is not the right fit for that squad and will not be on the touchline at the start of next season.’

He added it was ‘dangerous’ to think the German coach could mirror the impact of Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and said Rangnick always had an uphill task to hold the attention of the dressing room.

The Liverpool legend said the team did not have likeable traits and feels Cristiano Ronaldo’s high profile return has caused problems rather than solved them.

He said it was ‘dangerous’ to believe Ralf Rangnick could come in and replicate the work done by fellow Germans Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp

‘There is not a lot to like about them at the moment and Cristiano Ronaldo’s interview has blown open the divisions within the dressing room, highlighting the mentality issues.

‘I said from the outset that signing Ronaldo might expose more problems than it solved. That squad does not have the unity and discipline required to challenge City, Liverpool and Chelsea.’

United – who find themselves in seventh place, six points off the top four – have put in some ‘abysmal’ performances, Carragher claimed. He believes players have ‘switched off’, waiting for Rangnick’s full time successor and slammed them for ‘excuses’ made on social media.

‘Performances have been abysmal,’ he added. ‘If United play as they have been against the best teams in England and Europe, it will be a repeat of the games against Liverpool and City earlier this season, when they were outclassed. A lot of the players look like they have completely switched off, biding their time to see who the next manager will be.

Marcus Rashford should be ‘leaving everything on the pitch’ instead of making excuses on social media, he added

Those who you would have imagined to embrace a high energy game – such as Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood – are doing nowhere near enough. They are young lads who should be leaving everything on the pitch, vibrant with the ball and relentless in their running off it.

‘Instead, I am getting fed up with the excuses made on Rashford’s behalf by his PR team, especially, spinning a version of events to get sympathy. How about just playing better instead?

‘This criticism is deserved because when you look at the talent available in the United squad, they should be playing a more entertaining and energetic brand of football.’
