Jadon Sancho isn’t the only player being linked with a move to Manchester United with the summer transfer window now open. Talk is also rife that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, with the Red Devils already seeing one bid turned down by the La Liga side. So with United struggling to find an agreement for the England international, Express Sport will now take a look at four players they could accept as part of a swap deal instead.

Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard was a player written off by many at the start of 2021.

But, after a scintillating spell at West Ham where he scored nine goals from 16 Premier League outings, he’s turned his career around.

The problem for Lingard is, however, that United want to bolster their attack. And, should that happen, he’s not expected to get many minutes on the field of play.

Diego Simeone likes intelligent players and the 28-year-old certainly falls into that category, with his movement off the ball one of his best assets.

And while only a few English stars like to chance their arm abroad, Lingard could give it a crack and help United land Trippier in the process.

Diogo Dalot

All signs point to Diogo Dalot moving to Serie A with AC Milan.

But with United yet to come to an agreement with the Italian giants, a swap deal involving the Portugal international would make sense.

Atletico, if they lose Trippier, will need a right-back.

And with Dalot having no future at Old Trafford under Solskjaer, having previously been signed by Jose Mourinho, he’d arrive as a like for like replacement.

At eight years Trippier’s junior, it would be a swap deal that may please Atletico given his potential over the long term.

Eric Bailly

United secured Eric Bailly’s future earlier in the season, with the Ivory Coast international signing a new contract at the club.

However, the former Villarreal star is likely to spend most of next term on the bench – especially if Raphael Varane arrives from Real Madrid.

Bailly’s best form came during his time in Spain and with Atletico always looking to improve their rearguard, he’d be an interesting name on the table for Simeone.

New contracts mean very little these days.

You just have to look back at Patrice Evra’s one-year extension back in 2014 to know that, with the France international then departing for Juventus mere weeks later.

Alex Telles

United signed Alex Telles from Porto in last summer’s transfer window, eventually bringing the Brazil international to the club on deadline day.

But the Samba star failed to make an impact at the club.

Trippier would be able to play on both flanks for the Red Devils, while they also have Brandon Williams capable of doing the same.

Telles has indicated he doesn’t want to leave.

But if he were to be offered to Atletico, and the La Liga giants gave him assurances over his game time, it’s possible he’ll change his mind.

Ferdinand’s Trippier advice

While United want Trippier, club legend Rio Ferdinand isn’t so sold on the Atletico star.

“I don’t think they’d buy someone to come in and play [every week], I think whoever’s coming in there is going to be playing back-up,” he told the Metro.

“They spent £50 million on Wan-Bissaka, not to be a backup or number two.

“He [Trippier] wouldn’t be my choice if I’m honest, but I see the qualities he has.

“But Trippier definitely wouldn’t be my choice in terms of the profile of player that I’d be bringing in to play as a number two right-back.”
