Man Utd’s Amad loan move hits the buffers as injury forces Erik ten Hag U-turn

Man Utd: Shaw comments on Mount's signing

Manchester United have confirmed that Amad Diallo will miss the beginning of the Premier League season due to a knee injury he picked up during the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the US. The setback also reportedly will see him ruled out of a loan exit this summer as he will spend at least the first half of the season with the first team.

Diallo had impressed out on loan with Sunderland last season and there were question marks over whether he would be sent out once again, perhaps this time to a Premier League club, or remain at Old Trafford – but The Athletic have now claimed that as a result of the injury he will stay at United.

In a statement, United said: “Manchester United winger Amad will miss the first part of the Premier League season. The 21-year-old sustained a knee injury during the tour of the United States that is going to keep him out of action.”

Reports had previously stated that Amad’s preference would be to return to Sunderland in the Championship if he was sent back out on loan, though there was also interest from Serie A teams.

Amad staying at United does give Erik ten Hag another option in forward areas when he returns to action, where he will likely compete with Antony and Jadon Sancho for a spot on the right wing.

The club are still yet to make a decision on Mason Greenwood’s future, while Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount can also play on that flank, but Amad will hope to make an impression on the Dutch boss when he returns to training.

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray admitted that he hoped Amad would return to the Stadium of Light as he revealed United’s plan for the youngster. “I think Manchester United are happy, but I think the next step is for them to take him on pre-season to America,” Mowbray said at the start of the summer. “That’s what I think is going to happen. Then they’ll see how he gets on.

“They know what they’ve got, they bought him, but I think when the new manager came in, it was right on the cusp of whether they were going to keep him or not. He liked some of the stuff, but then he maybe wasn’t sure about other things.”

Amad helped take Sunderland to the play-offs and as United and Ten Hag were assessing him ahead of the coming season, any decision was taken out of their hands due to an injury he suffered in the 2-0 friendly win over Arsenal.
