Man Utd ‘would be contenders to win Champions League’ if they sign Declan Rice
TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent believes Manchester United ‘would be contenders for the Champions League’ if they signed West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.
Rice continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford after staying put at West Ham in the summer transfer window.
The defensive midfielder continues to star under David Moyes and it seems it is only a matter of time before the England midfielder will move to a bigger club.
And Bent believes United would be challenging for the Champions League if they secured the signing of Rice.
“You look at last season, Manchester United were one of the highest scoring teams in the league,” said Bent.
“They might have been the highest scoring, I know they were certainly up there, so clearly a priority was not an attacking player.
“Listen, I get it. In terms of if Ronaldo’s there you have to take him home. You have to bring him home, I 100 per cent get that.
To which fellow TalkSPORT pundit Andy Goldstein then replied saying: “Okay I get that, here’s the question right,” he said. “I agree with most of what you’re saying, but let’s just say you’ve got a holding midfielder. Let’s say you’ve got Declan Rice, does that whole team with Rice in it turn into a team that is going to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League?
How far will Man Utd go in the Champions League this season? Let us know in the comments section.
Bent later said: “Probably more than that, but someone like Declan in that holding role. If you had Declan Rice and Klopp, Guardiola in charge. With that squad, I don’t think they’d win it, but they’d be doing better than they are now. They look more consistent.”
United are currently top of their Champions League group with six points from the three Matchdays played so far.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will travel to Italy to face Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday following their Premier League contest with Tottenham on Saturday.
