Man Utd working on two more contract extensions after tying down Mike Phelan
Having tied down Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant boss Mike Phelan to a new contract, Manchester United are reportedly now working on handing new deals to two more coaches.
Phelan was originally assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson for five years from 2008, before leaving for coaching roles at Norwich City and Hull City.
He returned to Old Trafford as a first team coach when Solskjaer was named as caretaker manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December 2018.
After a successful stint as caretaker manager, Solskjaer was named as Mourinho’s permanent successor, with Phelan being promoted to become his assistant boss.
Phelan has helped Solskjaer to revitalise the Red Devils, leading the club to the final of last season’s Europa League.
The United manager was handed a new three-year deal in July, committing him to the club until at least 2024, with the option of an extra year.
Now, three months later, Phelan has signed his own extension, also tying him to United until at least 2024.
Following Phelan’s extension, BBC Sport report that United are working on also handing new deals to Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Carrick and McKenna currently occupy the first team coaching roles on Solskjaer’s backroom staff.
The former became an icon during his playing career with United, before joining Mourinho’s coaching staff when he retired in 2018.
He stayed on when Solskjaer became caretaker manager and has played a key role throughout the Norwegian’s reign.
Similarly, to Carrick, McKenna also first joined United when Mourinho was in charge, originally becoming Under 18s boss.

His work impressed Mourinho so much that he was promoted to the first-team coaching staff when the Portuguese’s assistant Rui Faria departed.
McKenna also stayed on to work under Solskjaer in a first-team coaching role, becoming a hugely popular member of the backroom staff.
The contract extensions to Solskjaer and his staff indicate that United remain happy with his management, despite a mixed run of recent results.
