Man Utd ‘willing to re-sign £31m flop Depay’ after getting rid five years ago

Manchester United are plotting an outlandish £8million swoop for ex-flop Memphis Depay just five years after his dismal spell at Old Trafford.

The Barcelona forward, 28, was seemingly set for a move to Serie A giants Juventus last week but the Old Lady pulled the plug on a deal at the 11th hour in favour of Marseille's Arkadiusz Milik.

Barcelona though are keen to flog several first-team stars in order to fall within La Liga's strict financial regulations and Depay is deemed surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.

With only eight days of the summer transfer window remaining, Man Utd are still eager to add depth to a depleted forward line, despite an unerring performance against Liverpool on Monday (August 22).

Erik ten Hag has already seen moves for Eredivisie duo Brian Brobbley and Anthony hit stumbling blocks, whilst the future of star man Cristiano Ronaldo remains clouded. According to Spanish outlet Marca, United are now readying a shock move to re-sign their former flop in a cut-price deal.

Signed by United for £31m in 2015, Depay registered just seven goals in 53 matches for the Red Devils before fleeing to Lyon on a permanent deal just 18 months into his four-year contract at Old Trafford.

Battling back from adversity with 63 goals in 139 Ligue 1 matches, Depay sealed a dream switch to the Camp Nou at the start of the 2021/22 campaign, tasked with replacing Lionel Messi as the club's leading marksman.

But after signing free-scoring Poland international Robert Lewandowski, Depay has been placed on the transfer list by boss Xaxi as La Blaugrana need to free up funds to register new signing Jules Kounde.
