Man Utd will fail Erik ten Hag demand if they don’t complete four transfers

Manchester United will have let down Erik ten Hag if they fail to complete at least four transfers this week. After the weekend’s spirited 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, the Dutchman called on the Red Devils hierarchy to make sure each position has two players capable of competing in the Premier League.

Transfer deadline day falls at 11pm on Friday – meaning United have just four days to complete their summer business. Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund are part of a near-£200m outlay.

But Ten Hag might hope for at least four more incomings after making a strong demand to the Old Trafford board at the weekend. He insists that he needs two Premier League-quality players in each position.

“If [players leave], then we will bring you news,” Ten Hag said after United defeated Forest. “We are prepared well. We are fully in control so if there are transfers, we need to keep the squad competitive because it will be a tough season with many games to cover.

“In many positions you need double and in the goalkeeping position we need three really good goalkeepers who can all keep the Premier League-standard so we will cover that.”

Dean Henderson looks set to quit United for Crystal Palace – meaning Ten Hag will want another No 2 to Onana. Altay Bayindir is widely linked with a switch to the 20-times English league champions.

Given that Ten Hag said he wants three Premier League-quality goalkeepers, he might even want another shot-stopper to arrive by Friday. But he perhaps believes that Tom Heaton – who has vast top-flight experience – is sufficient back-up.

In defence, Harry Maguire could leave Old Trafford before Friday. The England defender is keen for regular minutes ahead of Euro 2024 and has been linked with West Ham.

With only Victor Lindelof behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, that will leave Ten Hag short of his policy of having two players for every position. The former Ajax boss will therefore want another centre-back this week.

Casemiro has come under scrutiny for his displays in the holding role this term. The Brazilian was sensational last season but with the departure of Fred and the potential exit of Scott McTominay, he has little competition.

Sofyan Amrabat has been linked with Old Trafford. As has Ryan Gravenberch, who has been suggested as a makeweight in a shock swap deal that could see McTominay join Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag may also want another striker to compete with Hojlund, having seen Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford struggle in the centre-forward role this term. A new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker leaves United needing to make four signings this week to please their head coach.
