Alan Shearer has warned Manchester United that they need to fix their leaky defence if they’re to win anything this season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side forced their way into the title picture at the turn of the year but their hopes have already started to face following a series of poor results.

United’s hot streak was eventually ended by Sheffield United last month when the Blades stunned Old Trafford with a 2-1 win.

Solskjaer’s men bounced back in style though and blew Southampton away with a 9-0 thrashing on home soil.

It looked like United were finally back to their best in the first half against Everton, as they went in 2-0 at the break.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side came out fighting after the interval and pulled things level within minutes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin then earned the Toffees a point with a 96th-minute equaliser, following a lapse in concentration from a set-piece.

Ahead of the FA Cup clash with West Ham, Shearer laid into the club he could have signed for, telling them to buck their ideas up at the back.

“They would have concerns as well [over their defence]. That is a weakness of theirs,” he said.

“They’ve got no chance of being a successful team unless this improves and improves massively.

“They’ve conceded 30 goals this season in the Premier League.

“Nobody has conceded more than them in the top nine and Fulham have got 31 goals against and they’re in the bottom three. That tells you.

“There’s just far too much space. As a forward, you’d look forward to playing against Man United because you know you’re going to get chances.

“They’re all over the place, people pointing, people not tracking runners, people not picking up in the box, people not closing down crosses and also balls going into the box without any pressure on the ball.”

Former England striker Shearer feels as though United’s game management let them down in the disappointing results against Sheffield United and Everton.

He added: “[Against Sheffield United] They didn’t work hard enough to stop that cross, to close that player down, same again, they get three or four chances to clear the ball.

“They don’t do that and then they get punished and it’s in the back of the net. [Against Everton] Runners are going in bend, a mistake from the goalkeeper not for the first time this season, that can’t go back into the danger area there.

“[For the third goal] Everyone’s too deep, Maguire takes a step or two further back before everybody else but that line is too deep anyway and they get punished for it with the last kick of the game.

“For Man United to be successful they’re going to have to improve on that department.”
