Manchester United have a transfer budget of £100million this summer. However, with Jadon Sancho already in the bag and Raphael Varane poised to follow, that means the Red Devils won’t have much left over to spend on new reinforcements. So, with that being the case, Express Sport will now take a look at four free agents the Red Devils would be wise to target instead.
Jerome Boateng
Though United want to sign one defender in Varane, they’re not ruling out another.
That’s because Eric Bailly may return to Villarreal, while Axel Tuanzebe is primed to be loaned out.
So with United set to lose potentially two defenders, an approach for Bayern Munich icon Boateng would make sense.
The Germany international is a serial winner and currently without a club after leaving the Allianz Arena earlier this summer.
And while he previously struggled in England at Manchester City, the Red Devils have long held the 32-year-old in high esteem.

David Luiz
It would also be understandable if United were to consider a shock move for David Luiz.
Again, the potential exits of Tuanzebe and Bailly means the club risk being left short at the back next term.
And Luiz would be another solution should either of the duo depart.
Few expected him to leave Chelsea for Arsenal and he’s actually been a target for the Red Devils in the past, back when Jose Mourinho was in charge.
Therefore, it would make some sense at least.

Alex Teixeira
There are several players United have been linked with just about every single year.
Wesley Sneijder, Nicolas Gaitan and Ezequiel Garay are just three – while Alex Teixeira is another.
The 31-year-old is currently on the market after leaving Chinese club Jiangsu Suning, where he scored 10 goals in 19 Chinese Super League appearances.
So far this summer, United haven’t been mooted as a potential destination.
But with Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira potentially leaving, Teixeira has the potential to be a bargain replacement.

Diego Costa
Just imagine?
United have made a habit of signing golden oldies in recent years, from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2016 to Edinson Cavani 12 months ago.
And with Diego Costa on the market, he’d be an intriguing option.
Of course, United don’t have any interest at the current moment in time. Especially given the fine amount of young talent at their disposal.
But Costa is worthy of consideration regardless, even if he may be more hassle than he’s actually worth.
