Man Utd told ’34-year-old leader could be the answer’ in the transfer market

The January transfer window couldn't come soon enough for a Manchester United squad in a state of disrepair.

Erik ten Hag has spent a fortune renovating his squad since arriving at Old Trafford last year, but not all those new to the Theatre of Dreams have impressed. The manager has also been robbed of certain assets for chunks of his sophomore year in Manchester, with the likes of Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Jadon Sancho each missing considerable minutes for a variety of reasons.

However, former United striker Louis Saha has identified Bayern Munich veteran Thomas Muller as one who could bring some much-needed character to the dressing room. The 2014 World Cup-winner and 12-time Bundesliga champion has spent his entire career in Bavaria, but it's Saha's belief Muller could be the man to help reverse the Red Devils' fortunes.

“He may be 34 years of age but he could still be an answer for Manchester United, even if it’s not going to be a long-term solution for Erik ten Hag," said former Fulham, Everton and Newcastle striker Saha in an interview with Betfred. "Not many players in the world have the mixture of personality and experience that Muller has.

"Similar to when Manchester United signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo. Those players had no doubts regarding their ability and quality, and they’d be prepared to challenge anybody. They would challenge themselves and their team-mates.”

Would Thomas Muller be a positive signing for Man United in January? Let us know in the comments section below.

While Ronaldo's second stint at Old Trafford didn't yield the success he might have envisioned, both he and Ibrahimovic each would have brought a certain sense of self-belief to the squad. But making that rub off on those around you is a bigger ask, and Muller would be taking on a mighty task in the twilight of his career attempting to resurrect the Reds.

United have been linked with moves for Muller repeatedly in the past, but the Bavaria native has never strayed from his local club. That being said, 45-year-old Saha – who scored 42 goals in 124 appearances for United – won't give up on the possibility he may finally explore his options abroad.

"He’s definitely a great leader that’s admired across the footballing world," added Saha of the one-club man. "He’s played for one of the world’s best clubs for many, many years and he’s achieved a lot at Bayern Munich.”

Senior signings haven't always worked in United's favour in recent years, with the likes of Casemiro, Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani struggling to recapture their previous heights after moving to Old Trafford. Striking that balance between experience and potential has largely eluded the club, but Saha sees Muller as one name capable of rewriting the script.

He'd need to have a big impact too, especially given how low the mood is around Old Trafford right now. An embarrassing 3-0 battering at the hands of Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon saw them booed off the pitch.
