Manchester United will reportedly use Ralf Rangnick’s experience as a technical director to solve three pressing contract dilemmas. A couple of key players are out of contract at Old Trafford over the next few years.
Rangnick has been appointed as interim head coach until the end of the season. The German will then take on a consultancy role with the Red Devils.
United’s hierarchy is complex and it is not quite clear how the 63-year-old will fit into their structure beyond the 2021-22 campaign.
Rangnick has a couple of key issues to solve during his six months in charge, including United’s leaky defence.
The 20-times English champions have conceded four or more in Premier League matches against Leicester City, Liverpool and Watford. The latter fixture cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job.
United are currently eighth in the top-flight and guiding them back among the elite will be Rangnick’s primary short-term job.

However, he will also be used to help make off-field decisions. United have prised Rangnick away from Lokomotiv Moscow where he was managing director of sport.
Old Trafford bosses will likely want to use his expertise to negotiate contracts with key players.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, his knowledge will help in attempts to reach agreements with midfielders Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.
Those two players’ deals expire at the end of the season and fresh terms are yet to be reached. They are considered ‘urgent’.
Lingard recently posted a photo of him in a West Ham shirt to his Instagram story in a suggestion that he might favour a move to his former loan club.
Another regular first-teamer whose contract will soon expire is left-back Luke Shaw.
England’s Euro 2020 final goalscorer has a deal that runs until the end of the 2022-23 season and he will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in 13 months’ time.
Shaw actually came in for criticism from Rangnick in a resurfaced clip of the former RB Leipzig coach discussing United.
“They [Manchester United] could do with a left-back,” he said in September 2020.

Man Utd star Pogba has ‘brief’ chat with PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi
“I know they have Luke Shaw but I’m not so sure if he’s still on the same kind of level you need for a club like Manchester United.”
That was when Shaw was drastically out of form at United but his fortunes have since improved. The arrival of Alex Telles as competition that month prompted the 26-year-old to raise his game.
He can now argue a strong case as being England’s best left-back.
Meanwhile, caretaker boss Michael Carrick will remain in charge for United’s Premier League clash with Arsenal on Thursday, according to Sky Sports.
Rangnick’s first game in the dugout will likely be Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
