Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken out after his side’s 4-0 Europa League win over Real Sociedad on Thursday night. The Red Devils took a giant step towards the quarter-finals of the competition with a sublime display. And the Norweigan was happy after the game.

Manchester United went into the Europa League tie looking to bounce back after a disappointing 1-1 draw with West Brom.

And they did just that, producing a sublime performance away from home to virtually book their spot in the next round of the competition.

Bruno Fernandes was, inevitably, the hero of the hour with the Portugal international bagging a brace to take his goal tally for the season up to 21.

Marcus Rashford then added a third and, late on, Daniel James got in on the act.

And Solskjaer was delighted after the game, admitting United deserved the result – but also stressing they’re still a ‘work in progress’.

“We scored some good goals and played some nice football,” he said.

“We deserved to win but maybe not by four goals.

“On a night like this when we find spaces we can be a dangerous team.

“We had to defend well, they have some terrific players up front and we earned the right to counter-attack quickly. They opened up and we got the spaces we wanted.

“Every team attacks you, it’s about finding the moments to find the space.

“We are a work in progress, we are learning and some games we have not been able to win lately.”

United goalscorer Fernandes, when quizzed on whether the result or performance was more significant, said: “The result.

“It’s about winning. We want to win the games.

“Today we did everything well. The result is on our side but we have the second leg, still we have a tough game to do again in our home.

“We know 4-0 is a good result but we have to be aware of what Real Sociedad can do and be ready for what they can do.”

On his first goal, he added; “I just wait for the moment, for the ball to come down, wait for the right moment to kick because if you rush sometimes in that moment you can take a wrong shot and the ball goes out.

“I just wait for the right moment to kick it.”

On his second, he added: “I was expecting the touch from Dan James. But I think when he controls the ball it was a control. I give him an assist.

“I see the ball close from me, in that occasion the keeper is coming out and if you kick well first team it is difficult to react.”

Fernandes also insisted the result would have little impact on United’s mood and confidence.

“We don’t have to look for the results we have to look for the performance,” he said.

“We know we don’t perform well in some games. But still in some games we don’t get the result we want and perform well.

“So we need to understand, we need to grow up, get better and better and of course the most important is the results and give you confidence to go to the next game to go again.”
