Manchester United will cite the lack of punishment handed to Kevin de Bruyne for his tackle on Idrissa Gueye as they try to get Aaron Wan-Bissaka's ban overturned.

The right-back was sent off for a dangerous tackle in the Champions League clash with Young Boys and was handed a two-match ban.

It has caused mass outrage in the United ranks, especially among the fans, where a similar challenge went unpunished at Manchester City.

De Bruyne planted a nasty tackle on Gueye's ankle during the clash with PSG but the Belgian escaped with just a yellow card.

According to The Sun, United are prepared to cite this incident during an appeal to reduce Wan-Bissaka's punishment ahead of their next Champions League match.

The Red Devils were without the former Crystal Palace star's services against Villarreal and fielded Diogo Dalot on the right-hand side.

United did manage to claim a victory in the dying moments through Cristiano Ronaldo but only because of David de Gea's earlier heroics.

The Spanish side got a lot of joy out of the flanks and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is concerned going into the next match in Europe.

Atalanta travel to Old Trafford next and are well-known for their quick style and wing-back formation that could hurt United on the wings.

So getting Wan-Bissaka back into the team is pivotal for Solskjaer's plans while the Norwegian was less than impressed with the lack of consistency.

He said: “I’m very surprised, very disappointed. Of course we’re going to appeal.

"It’s almost a three-game ban because it’s early in the game, 30 minutes, so it’s two thirds of another game, and if you look at other tackles from the other side of the city as well, that’s probably more dangerous.

"And that’s a yellow card, that’s inconsistency, that’s football for us.”
