Man Utd to hand Lee Grant new contract – but with change to his role in team
Lee Grant is in line for a shock new contract at Manchester United – despite not making a Premier League appearance for the club.
The United third-choice keeper, 38, is seen as experienced cover at Old Trafford but to date his only first-team action has been a League Cup and Europa League start.
But the ex-Derby, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday stopper could still be handed a player-coach deal in the summer when his playing contract expires.
Grant, a £1.5million signing from Stoke in July 2018, is currently doing his coaching courses and United are considering adding him to their keeper-coaching ranks in June.
The news comes just weeks after Grant admitting to being frustrated that a hard week of training is not rewarded by a match at the weekend as it has done throughout his career.
He said in a chat with The Sun in January: “It doesn’t matter how long into your career you are, you still find that frustration on a Saturday when you’re not playing.
“I know I’m at Manchester United, you’ve got some of the best goalkeepers in the world in front of you but you still have that personal pride and professionalism.
“You want to play. In one respect being a No 3 here is ideal.
“Then in another respect, if you speak to my wife, she’ll say, ‘I need to get him playing because he comes home and from one minute to the next, I don't know what I'm dealing with’.
“I’m walking in like a zombie moaning that I’m still good enough to play and I’m training my b***s off, working at a hard level.”
Grant, 38, joined the club in a surprise move from Stoke back in 2018, and Solskjaer praised the attitude of the veteran after his own arrival.

He said: “For a manager like me to have Lee [Grant] to call upon it’s fantastic.
“He has a world-class attitude. He’s probably the fittest of the keepers. He always does extra.
“He’s a 36-year-old going on 26. I’ve got the perfect goalkeeping department.”
