Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham has urged the Red Devils to avoid signing Paris Saint-Germain ace Kylian Mbappe in favour of moves for England duo Harry Kane and Declan Rice. Sheringham believes United boss Erik ten Hag already has too many players who are similar to the France ace.

The former England striker insists that a double transfer pursuit of Kane and Rice would be more beneficial for United. He has urged the club to revert to their previous model of paying “over the odds” for the best available players.

Sheringham listed three previous transfers United have made that fits into that model. The 56-year-old wants Kane and Rice signed to improve Ten Hag’s squad.

“Man United have always bought the best. They have signed Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney – all were the best available,” he told Genting Casino.

“You need players with professionalism, desire and focus and they should look no further than Harry Kane.

“They’re desperate for a focal point up front and if they should also get Declan Rice, who knows when to calm it down and speed it up. United used to pay over the odds to get these players and they must do it again.”

Sheringham believes already having Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo and Antony should prevent a move for Mbappe. He added: “I don’t think Mbappe is what United need. They already have ‘flitty’ players – if I can call them that – and need focused and determined players like Kane and Rice.

“They may not be the most flair players but they do the right things at the right time. Mbappe is a wonderful player but I don’t know if you need another flair player like Rashford, Ronaldo and Antony.”

Mbappe has recently been linked with a departure from PSG, despite penning a blockbuster £1million per-week contract in May. Last month, he was forced to deny speculation that he had grown unhappy in the French capital.

He told journalists: “I never asked for my departure in January. The information that came out on the day of the [Champions League match against Benfica], I did not understand it. I am not involved in this information neither directly nor indirectly.

“I was as shocked by this news as everyone else. People may think I’m involved, I’m not at all. I was taking a nap, my entourage was at my little brother’s game. We were stunned when we found out.

“Afterwards, we had to deal with it, we had a match to play. I just wanted to say that it’s completely false, I’m very happy here.”
