Manchester United have rejected Newcastle United’s initial approach to sign Jesse Lingard on loan until the end of the season. However, the Red Devils have named their price and Newcastle are ‘expected’ to return with an improved offer before the January transfer deadline.

According to the Guardian, Eddie Howe is keen to make Lingard his third signing as Newcastle manager.

The Magpies completed a £12million deal for Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier to kick start their January spending.

They flaunted their financial power under new Saudi Arabia-backed ownership by then triggering Chris Wood’s £25million Burnley release clause.

And Lingard has joined Diego Carlos as Howe’s next two targets as he continues to bolster his squad ahead of the final few months of the season.

But the report states United have turned Newcastle away for now, in an attempt to secure a loan fee, given it would spell the end of Lingard’s time at the club.

His contract expires in July, so a loan exit this month would make little sense if the Premier League giants didn’t pocket anything in return.

TalkSPORT claim the Old Trafford club will allow Lingard to leave if Newcastle cough up a loan fee worth £3.5m.

And they are expected to return, potentially meeting United’s valuation, after expressing an interest in the 29-year-old at a lower price.

Newcastle will hope Lingard could arrive at St. James’ Park and have the same impact as at West Ham United last season.

Last January, the England international joined West Ham and registered nine goals and four assists in 16 Premier League appearances.

Howe desperately needs fresh firepower as he battles to steer Newcastle away from the relegation zone.

And Lingard could provide the attacking spark required to do exactly that if the Magpies find a breakthrough with his parent club.

Lingard decided to stay in Manchester and fight for his place amid interest from West Ham in the summer.

But he has understandably cut a frustrated figure after making just two starts in all competitions so far this term.

And with the World Cup in Qatar taking place later this year, he will be desperate to increase his game time to impress Gareth Southgate.

Lingard hasn’t travelled to London with the United squad for Wednesday’s game at Brentford due to an ankle injury.
