Man Utd team news as Ten Hag makes Marcus Rashford Sevilla decision

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the Nottingham Forest game

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has both Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw to call upon again for the Red Devils’ crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg away to Sevilla on Thursday. Having surrendered a two-goal advantage through late own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire at Old Trafford, United will need to win in Spain in order to advance past Sevilla, as Ten Hag has a selection dilemma on his hands.

Rashford and Shaw have both missed the last two games through injury, but could return in a major boost as they were named in the 21-man squad for the tie. Scott McTominay, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane did not travel as they continue to remain in England to continue their recovery from injuries while Bruno Fernandes is suspended for the game.

Despite the games coming thick and fast as Ten Hag previously pointed out in his criticism of the Premier League schedule, the Dutchman will be desperate to advance in Europe and will name as strong a side as possible.

Express Sport runs through how Ten Hag will likely line up against Sevilla, with as many as three changes possible.

Goalkeeper: David De Gea

David De Gea is reportedly on the verge of agreeing a new contract at Old Trafford as Ten Hag has put the faith in the Spanish goalkeeper this season, despite previous reports that the boss preferred a stopper more capable with his feet.

De Gea has been an ever-present in the Europa League this campaign and will likely continue in goal after shaking off a minor injury worry in the 2-0 win away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Defence: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw

With Malacia and Shaw unavailable for the trip to the City Ground last time out, Diogo Dalot deputised on the left and proved his capabilities in that role – also clinching the three points with a late goal. However, if Shaw is able to start then Ten Hag will likely recall the England international to the starting lineup.

Both Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka impressed against Forest as they were afforded time and space to move into the midfield, Ten Hag will likely be confident in either player – a good problem to have for the Dutchman to have. Though Wan-Bissaka could get the nod as he was preferred in the first leg.

Injuries to Martinez and Varane ensure a likely stay in the team for Maguire and Victor Lindelof, who kept a clean sheet against Forest.

Midfield: Casemiro, Fred, Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen was drafted into the starting lineup late on against Forest after Marcel Sabitzer pulled out of the warm-up through injury, as the Austrian’s fitness status could decide the midfield trio.

If Sabitzer is fit, then Ten Hag would likely prefer to use Eriksen alongside Casemiro and with Sabitzer higher up the pitch – as he has used Fernandes in Eriksen’s absence – but if the loanee is not ready to start then his hands may be tied and Fred is utilised in order to add more legs to the middle of the pitch.

Attack: Antony, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford

Antony had one of his best performances in a United shirt during the win over Forest, as he will likely continue in the role as Ten Hag hopes that he can replicate his display from the weekend. Anthony Martial was given another 72 minutes to continue his comeback from injury, providing he is fit to start then the Frenchman should be picked ahead of Wout Weghorst once again.

Ten Hag provided an update on Rashford’s status going into the game, stating that he has had prior individual work before training with the squad on Wednesday and will hope he can call upon his talisman.
