Cody Gakpo has told Manchester United he is ready to “think about” a move to Old Trafford as soon as January as the Red Devils ponder a lucrative swoop for the PSV Eindhoven star following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 23-year-old winger was the subject of talks with Erik ten Hag earlier this summer before the United head coach spent big on Antony following his £86million switch from Ajax.
But Gakpo remains on United’s radar and his stock has sky-rocketed in recent weeks after he netted in all three of Netherlands’ Group A matches at the World Cup in Qatar.
The jet-heeled forward has made it clear he is now awaiting an offer to land on the table, despite conceding that he was left disappointed when United cooled their interest just a matter of months ago.
“What comes, will come,” Gakpo told NRC. “I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. If they come, I will think about it. In these decisions too, I seek God’s help. I ask him what I can do best.”
Gapko considered joining Leeds after United took a backseat in the race for his services before the start of the 2022/23 season but the attacker was not sold on a switch to Elland Road.
“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know anymore.
“I started having doubts. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait and see everything.”
Leeds were confident of striking a deal with PSV for Gakpo but the Dutch giants eventually dug their heels into the ground over a deal – a decision they are now set to benefit from.
Both Everton and Southampton also showed interest in the Dutchman, who is now being monitored by the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool in addition to United.

Gakpo was initially made available for around £25m last summer before PSV made waves in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
He was then deemed integral to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side’s hopes of booking their place in Europe’s elite club competition before a bitter two-legged defeat to Rangers.
That’s when Gakpo was really in the shop window but he was not entirely sold on any move barring United and their offer never landed.
However, that could soon change in January when United are expected to recruit another attacking player following Ronaldo’s exit.
Gakpo is already well known to Ten Hag after scoring the winning goal for PSV in their KNVB Cup final triumph over Ajax at the end of last season.
He has been the heartbeat of the PSV side that continually challenged Ten Hag’s Ajax for major honours in Holland.
The pair have remained in contact ever since and United are now believed to be back in contact with his representatives over a deal.
PSV are now set to demand upwards of £50m for their talisman but they are facing financial pressure off the field of play – meaning a sale looks likely.
