Friday marks the latest significant day in the Manchester United takeover saga, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe expected at Old Trafford for crunch talks. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani’s delegation paid a visit on Thursday, but now it’s the INEOS boss’ turn to exchange information and form relationships.

The tides appear to be turning in the Qatari banker’s favour after the party he sent to Manchester reportedly held talks for 10 hours. The meetings have been described as ‘very positive’ and ‘substantive’, with Sheikh Jassim now set to launch an improved second bid.

He isn’t the only suitor interested in a full-scale sale, with reports claiming there are two other parties aside from him and Ratcliffe eyeing a full sale. But they are the two leading candidates, and Ratcliffe will reportedly take five trusted advisors with him for the same Old Trafford and Carrington experience on Friday.

According to The Independent, INEOS co-owners Andy Currie and John Reece will join him in Manchester.

Sheikh Jassim absence explained

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani was not present in Manchester on Thursday, sending a delegation for takeover talks.

It has led to some fans questioning whether the Qatari banker is truly committed to overthrowing the Glazers.

However, Sky Sports report that he believed it was too early in the process to visit for a ‘photo opportunity’.

Kaveh Solhekol said: “Feeling that it was too early in the process for Sheikh Jassim to go to Old Trafford in person today. He’s been there before as a fan.

“He didn’t just want to go today for a photo opportunity. He sent his top team of experts in finance, banking, property and law.”
