Bruno Fernandes is reportedly refusing to sign a new contract at Manchester United until he receives assurances over their long-term plans in the transfer market. The Portuguese playmaker has been instrumental to the club’s fortunes in the past 13 months since arriving from Sporting for £47million but he remains one of the lowest-paid stars at the Old Trafford.

That is not a fair reflection of his efforts since he came through the door and understandably, United are willing to dig deep into their pockets to ensure Fernandes commits his future to the club.

The 26-year-old currently earns in the region of £100,000-a-week and is someway behind the club’s top earners David de Gea (£375,000-a-week) and Paul Pogba (£290,000-a-week).

Fernandes has hit 16 goals and registered 10 assists in 28 Premier League outings this season, form that has elevated United into second place.

Yet the Red Devils are still 11 points adrift of rivals Manchester City, despite last weekend’s 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

If United are to make up that ground next season, Ed Woodward will need to ensure the club bring the right signings through the door this summer with the likes of Erling Haaland and Jules Kounde under consideration.

According to The Sun, United have presented Fernandes with a bumper new contract offer that would see him double his wages to £200,000-a-week.

However, the attacking midfielder is said to have handed the board an ultimatum that he will not sign it until he receives assurances that they are planning to spend in the transfer market.

Fernandes is desperate to be fighting for the biggest prizes and will not settle for a top-four finish every season.

He wants to know his ambitions are matched in the Old Trafford ballroom, even though he remains highly unlikely to leave the club.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have struggled to cope with the financial constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic and no longer have the muscle to prise the biggest stars away from the Premier League.

Fernandes was on target again in last Sunday’s crucial 2-0 win at noisy neighbours City.

He successfully dispatched a second-minute penalty to defuse claims he does not turn up in matches against United’s Big Six rivals.

“Every penalty has the same pressure for me,” Fernandes said when asked if he was feeling the heat ahead of his spot-kick. “It’s always pressure to take a pen, doesn’t matter if it’s against City, or another team. It’s always pressure to take the pens.

“I like that kind of pressure. It’s good pressure. I knew what I had to do. I did it in the right way with the right power and I’m happy to score, of course.

“Honestly for us it’s about winning. People will always complain about everything. Today it will still be Bruno never scores in big games.

“They will put open play no goals, it was a penalty [and say] it doesn’t count! So for us the most important thing is winning the game.

“It doesn’t matter how you score, when the ball touches the net it’s a goal. I will be happy and it doesn’t matter if it’s me or another one scoring.”
