Some Manchester United staff are reportedly considering striking or quitting the club should Mason Greenwood return to action.
Greenwood, 21, hasn’t played for United in 18 months after he was suspended by the club following his arrest in January 2022, with charges for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm all brought against him. He denied all charges.
Those charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service, and United have since undertaken their own internal investigation into his future which is nearing its conclusion.
And in the wake of announcing their decision on Greenwood, United released a statement regarding their decision making, ending: "We ask for patience as we work through the final stages of this carefully considered process,” which has garnered plenty of backlash on social media.

But it’s also been reported by The Athletic that the decision on Greenwood’s future has caused unhappiness internally at the club after it was alleged that multiple intense meetings involving senior figures at Old Trafford and staff have taken place.
It’s said that some staff feel ‘ashamed’ by the club’s decision to consider reintegrating Greenwood which has led to discussions involving striking or resigning from their jobs.
But those extreme measures remain hypothetical until the club communicates their final decision, while it’s said that the gravity of the situation could lead those aggrieved employees to speak to journalists rather than those who support the decision to return Greenwood to the club.
Another point that has been put to the United hierarchy in light of a decision by those staff members is how are they supposed to justify a decision to bring back Greenwood to their friends and family.
United were originally scheduled to make a decision on Greenwood’s future on Friday August 4, before the beginning of the season, but that decision was delayed. A new date for the final decision to be announced is still unknown.
