Man Utd ‘set to bid for Onana’ who was banned from football for nine months
Manchester United target Andre Onana once failed a drugs test and was banned from football for nine months.
Inter Milan goalkeeper Onana, 27, is high on United’s priority list of targets as Erik ten Hag looks to sign a new number one following David de Gea’s contract saga.
De Gea was set to sign a new £200k deal at Old Trafford, after accepting a wage drop from £375k, in order to remain a United player. But that deal has been taken off the table by Ten Hag who’s sceptical about the Spaniard.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports Ten Hag is lining up Onana, who was his number one at Ajax, to replace De Gea and United are reportedly progressing in talks with the Cameroonian and could be set to bid for the player soon.

But not many people will know that Onana’s career was on the verge of collapsing back in 2020 whilst he was playing under Ten Hag at Ajax.
Whilst suffering from a headache at home, Onana mistakenly took his wife’s prescribed medication of Lasimac instead of Litacold.

Ajax’s former chief executive Edwin van der Sar said that the blister packed looked the same and so did the pill – at only 6mm in diameter. Despite the mix up and UEFA accepting that Onana had made no attempt to cheat, he was still banned for nine months, with Van der Sar saying: “It’s incredible: 40mg can destroy a career.”
Onana returned for the last 23 league games of the 2021/22 season but despite being Ajax’s undroppable number one prior to his ban, the Cameroonian played just six more Eredivisie games before joining Inter Milan in 2022 on a free transfer.
After an impressive debut campaign in Serie A, it seems that Onana could be on the move again with Ten Hag seemingly making his former keeper the priority choice to replace De Gea who has now become a free agent.
