Manchester United could be the latest Premier League side to suffer from a Barcelona hijack as both clubs battle to sign Monaco defender Vanderson, according to reports in the Spanish media. The La Liga club signed several of Chelsea’s transfer targets in the summer and could now attempt to beat United to Vanderson.

The 21-year-old is a highly-rated right-back and has already been linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs. United head coach Erik ten Hag wants to upgrade in the position but other areas were prioritised in the latest transfer window.

Ten Hag has not been impressed by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and has instead used Diogo Dalot on the right side of his back four this season. Dalot has impressed but there is still scope for the Red Devils to upgrade.

United have been linked with Monaco ace Vanderson and could target a transfer either in January or next summer. However, they will face strong competition from Barcelona.

According to Spanish publication Sport, the Nou Camp hierarchy consider Vanderson to be the long-term answer to their problems at right-back. An attempt was made in the summer when it became clear that Sergino Dest would join AC Milan on loan.

Monaco managed to keep the starlet beyond the transfer deadline. He has made seven appearances in Ligue 1 this term, missing only one game due to suspension.

Vanderson only joined Monaco from Gremio in January in a £9m deal. He is yet to feature for Brazil at any level but is a highly-rated prospect and several clubs have been keeping tabs on his development. The same publication claims that Man Utd are working on a deal to sign the player.

Like the Premier League side, Barcelona have a pressing need to sign a new right-back. Dest’s performances before his move to Milan were criticised, while Sergi Roberto and new signing Hector Bellerin have contracts that expire next summer.

It is widely expected that Bellerin, who spent time in Barcelona’s La Masia academy before joining Arsenal, will return to Real Betis in 2023. The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at boyhood club Betis last term, but the Spanish side were struggling to make the deal permanent at the end of 2021-22 due to their salary cap.

Barcelona hijacked several Chelsea deals in the summer. The Blues were interested in signing Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Raphina, but all three went to Los Blaugrana. Andreas Christensen, the former Chelsea defender, also signed for the La Liga side after his contract with the West Londoners expired.
