Manchester United are believed to be ‘seriously considering’ Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as a replacement for wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo. The Cameroonian’s contract in Bavaria expires at the end of the season and he would therefore be available on the cheap.

Choupo-Moting is not an automatic starter for the Bundesliga champions but he has performed admirably whenever he has been called upon. He has netted eight goals in 13 appearances despite being on the pitch for only 615 minutes. He got himself on the scoresheet again for his current side last night, scoring the second in Bayern’s 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Now, French publication Media Foot reports that he has become a target for United, with the club showing a very strong interest in him. Erik ten Hag is said to admire his versatility and experience and would be a useful signing given he could be available for nothing come the summer.

The 33-year-old will be familiar to fans of the Premier League having previously spent an unsuccessful spell at Stoke. Bizarrely, he went onto join PSG after his time at the Bet365 Stadium with a move to Germany following afterwards.

Choupo-Moting could potentially arrive as a replacement for Ronaldo with the Portugal captain’s contract expiring at the end of the season. He could potentially exit Old Trafford earlier should a suitable offer come in for his services with a departure appearing to be in the best interests of himself and the club.

However, United may have to overcome some hurdles to secure his signature with Bayern keen to offer him a new deal on the back of his performances. Given his success in the Bundesliga, it may be tough to convince him to turn it down in order to make a return to the Premier League.
