Man Utd sent warning by Peter Schmeichel despite passing Leeds "acid test"

Peter Schmeichel has warned Manchester United that winning at Leeds doesn't make them a champion side again.

United survived a stunning comeback from Leeds and a hostile atmosphere to emerge 4-2 winners at Elland Road on Sunday.

The triumph eased the pressure on interim boss Ralf Rangnick and strengthened United's grip of fourth place in the Premier League table.

But Schmeichel insists the win proves nothing and that his former club still have a lot of work to do before people can consider them to be a genuine force in English football again.

Schmeichel, who won 15 major trophies during a glittering spell at Old Trafford, said: "It was important that Manchester United came out in the most difficult circumstances to show the world that they are together and play as a team.

"Let me be absolutely clear, it was a great win, but I think there is a long, long way to go for the team.

"They've still got in terms of football so many more things to prove."

Schmeichel reckons handling all the abuse along with torrential rain at Elland Road does show United have more character than people give them credit for.

The former Denmark international added: "It took me back a little bit. In modern-day football you don't really see these scruffy games anymore.

"The pitches are so good, of course we get bad weather, but Sunday was a big, big test for both teams.

"Of course, with the scrutiny that Manchester United are under at the moment, it was an acid test for the team and I thought they played really, really well."
