Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has reportedly sprained his ankle and therefore will not spend an extended period of time out of the team. The France international hobbled down the tunnel at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

United were truly put to the sword by rivals Manchester City at the weekend, losing 6-3 thanks to hat-tricks from both Phil Foden and Erling Haaland. Though at 3-0 down, matters went from bad to worse as Varane received medical attention for an ankle injury.

Victor Lindelof entered the fray for the former Real Madrid star, with many wary that Varane’s injury struggles previously could hint at long-term absence for the central defender. However, according to L’Equipe, that won’t be the case.

The 29-year-old had his ankle examined on Monday and it is believed to have only been sprained, much to the relief of many who feared ligament damage. The doctors are believed to have told Varane that he needs a ‘period of absence’ though for how long is unknown.
